Moon Crater Formation

Origin of Most
Moon Craters

These lunar craters are miles across.  Where is the “impact ejecta” around the craters in this image? The lack of ejecta is unequivocal evidence that these pristine craters were not made by impact. Instead, they were created in a manner similar to the craters at the bottom of Crater Lake and the ocean— Steam explosions from hydrothermal vents. Rather than being absent, the ejecta was dispersed by water under which the eruption occurred. To learn more about hydrothermal vents and the actual origin for almost all the Moon’s craters read Chapter 7 The Hydroplanet Model.
