Solar Eclipse Science Camp – By Russ Barlow

Universal Model supporter Russ Barlow will be hosting a UM educational event Sunday evening Aug 20th starting at 8:30pm. Event details according to Russ, “Universal Model science presentation, Sunday evening star party, Monday morning solar telescope for viewing the surface of the sun. Monday morning pre-eclipse discussion on the history of eclipses and the science behind it. Don’t miss this event! For most people, experiencing a total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Pictures cannot convey this extraordinary phenomenon! Copy coordinates to see where we plan to be.”

Presentation will be Sunday Evening at 8:30 (Sunset) It will be outdoor Star-viewing afterward, from about 10:00 on to whenever Monday morning Partial Solar Eclipse begins at approximately 10:21 AM Local time Totality happens about 1-hour later, approximately 11:40.

Location – 42°52’00.9″N 107°23’20.3″W (Located near Casper Wyoming)
Directions to the expected camp location are as follows:

  • Head northeast on Wyoming State Highway 789N toward Gas Hills Road
  • Take Gas Hills (Wyoming-136) East about 44 miles
  • Turn Left onto Dry Creek Road for 7.3 miles
  • (Dry Creek becomes Gas Hills again) for 3.2 miles
  • Gas Hills becomes County Road 212 for 3.1 miles
  • Turn right onto Poison Spider Road
  • Watch for these signs as you get closer! (see image of the signs towards the end of this post)

Russ Barlow is also ordering t-shirts for the event for all those who want them, “I am ordering T-shirts for this event. If you pre-order, cost will be about $10.00. They will be about $17 at the solar camp. Sizes are Adult S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL and Youth Small and XSmall. A Small adult runs about the same as a Youth Medium. XXL and XXXL are $2 more.
